Electronic Records Improve Type 2 Diabetes Management

Up until recently health care records were kept on paper. A doctor would come in examine you and write out what he found on paper.  The record would stay with them.  You would go see a specialist or another doctor and the record would have to be mailed or faxed to them from your first doctor.  And then computers came along.  A computer’s electronic records improve type 2 diabetes management by allowing all your doctor’s access to your records without the paper shuffling and eliminated the need to try to read the doctor’s handwriting.

Medical practices using electronic health records (EHRs) achieve significantly higher composite standards for diabetes care and outcomes than those using paper records, according to a study published in the Sept. 1 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Randall D. Cebul, M.D., from the Case Western Reserve University at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, and colleagues compared the achievement of and improvement in quality standards for diabetes at practices using EHRs with those using paper records.

Diabetes care and outcomes was significantly higher, at EHR sites than paper-based sites (35.1 and 15.2 percent, respectively). EHR sites were also correlated with significantly higher achievement of care and outcome standards, and greater improvement in diabetes care.

I have worked for years as a nurse and I certainly look forward to seeing how electronic records improve type 2 diabetes management.  Gone will be the time when nurses will have to make calls in the middle of night when they can’t read the doctor’s handwriting or make mistakes in trying to interpret the hen’s scrabble.  The improvement in safety for the patient is enormous.

You can now let electronic records improve type 2 diabetes management yourself by carrying a flash drive or store your data on your iPhone, ipad, or other electronic device.
