Lu Young, RN has been a nurse for over 10 years, but her earlier history is more interesting.

Ms. Young’s mother was diagnosed with diabetes when she was only 8 years old and this was before home blood glucose monitoring was widely available.  As a result, Ms. Young’s mother often was hospitalized with severe hyperglycemia.  And this was in the era when kids of only 8 could not visit patients, so she often went days or weeks without seeing her mother.

Growing up, two of her three brothers were also diagnosed with diabetes.  One of the brothers died after surgery (possibly related to diabetes).

Ms. Young has taken measures to prevent diabetes for herself.  She is semi-vegetarian and a recovering sugarholic.  She has a sugary treat only once a month.

Ms. Young wants to prevent diabetes whenever possible and complications in those already diagnosed with diabetes.

And as for the picture above – it is Ms. Young at the age of 4 dressed in a nurse costume.
